ASOTIN – After getting left out of the playoffs last season despite going 8-1, the Asotin Panthers (1-0) know there’s one way to make up for it.  “Make it to playoffs this year,” said quarterback Ben Servatius.

The Panthers showed they’re ready to do just that by opening up their season with a convincing 43-28 victory over the Orofino Maniacs (0-2) Friday night.

With Servatius leading the way, the senior threw for 153 yards and two scores, while completing 12-of-18 passes.  “That really opened up the game (offensively) for us,” said Panthers head coach Sal Lopez.

Already battling injuries suffered in the preseason, Asotin took another hit on just the second play of the game.  Starting right guard Jordan Styner went down with what was diagnosed as a strained knee and didn’t return.  “I saw the whole thing happen,” said Lopez.  “But that’s the way it goes.  The kids really stepped up.”

While senior mainstays Clay DeBord and Clint Johnsen surrounding him, sophomore Robert Seibly stepped in and helped junior Dillon Glover pound out 58 yards on 11 carries, which included a 10-yard touchdown run.  “Those were tough yards he picked up,” said Lopez.

GAME NOTES:

Orofino – The Maniacs were without starting quarterback Seth Melton who was injured in last week’s game against McCall-Donnelly.  Junior runningback Stefan Hiebert started in his place… Junior runningback Jason Thompson rushed for a game-high 173 yards and scored three touchdowns… In the third quarter, Thomspon fumble the ball away deep inside Asotin territory.  On the subsequence play, the linebacker recovered a Levi Forsberg fumble and returned it for a touchdown.

Asotin – Juniors Levi Forsberg (75 yards) and Johnathon Miller (70) combined for 145 yards on the ground… Coach Lopez says he expects G Jordan Styner (knee) “to be out a week or so”… this marks the Panthers third win in three seasons against Orofino.
