Troy 50, Kendrick 0

TROY — Coming into this fall, many coaches around the Whitepine League said the Troy Trojans (1-0) were the team to beat.  In their season opener Friday night, they showed why with a 50-0 victory over Kendrick.

Trying to set the tone early, Tigers head coach Davey Steele attempted an onside kick to open the game.  Unfortunately for him, he got the exact opposite result he was looking for.  After the Trojans recovered, senior quarterback Hayden Kanikkeberg found junior end Nate Illi for a 46-yard scoring strike on the first play from scrimmage.  “That set the tone,” said Troy head coach Rob Bafus.

Behind a balanced offensive attack, the Trojans passed for 193 yards and ran for another 191 as they inflicted the 45-point mercy rule just over three minutes into the third quarter.

Senior tailback Marshall Williams led Troy in rushing with 167 yards on 13 carries, and visited the endzone three times.  Kanikkeberg was equally effective through the air, completing 7-of-11 passes for 193 yards.  Overall, Bafus said he was happy with his team’s performance.

“We had a lot of penalties and need to tighten that up, but that’s probably just me trying to find something,” said Bafus.  “This team has the chance to be something special.”
