15 11 2010

Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel has been named the Pac-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week following the Cougars 31-14 victory over Oregon State.

Tuel – a true sophomore – completed 10 of 15 passes for 157 yards and no interceptions, and added a career-high 79 yards rushing on 18 carries.

The last time a WSU football player won all-conference honors was Nico Grasu back on November 22, 2008.  Grasu booted three field goals in a game against the Washington Huskies, including the game-winner in double overtime,  as the Cougs won the 101st edition of the Apple Cup, 16-13.

Pac-10 Players of the of the Week:
Defense – LB Mike Mohamed, California (career-high 16 tackles)
Special Teams – PR Cliff Harris, Oregon (64-yard punt return for a touchdown)

NOTES:

  • The 2008 Apple Cup was WSU’s last victory over a Pac-10 opponent prior to Saturday victory in Corvallis.
  • The last offensive player to garner the award was quarterback Marshall Lobbestael during the same season.  As a redshirt freshman, Lobbestael directed the Cougs to a 48-9 win over Portland State.  The signal-caller complete 9 of 12 passes for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns after both Gary Rogers and Kevin Lopina suffered injuries causing them to leave the game.
