Nobody Is Perfect

29 12 2010

Thanks to Georgia Tech’s inept special teams, I saw my perfect bowl record fall last night.  Sure the Yellow Jackets offense only scored seven points, but their inability to field a punt was what doomed them in the end giving away great field position on multiple occasions.

Oh well.  It’s time to get back up off the mat.  Here is tonight’s prediction…

Insight Bowl
#12 Missouri (10-2) vs. Iowa (7-5) – 7:00 PM (ESPN)
Tempe, Arizona
Line: Mizzou by 3  Over/under: 46.5

These are two teams that have trended in opposite directions.  Iowa opened up the season ranked 9th in the country, while Missouri wasn’t even on the radar.  Since then, the Hawkeyes have battled more adversity than they could handle, as the Tigers have put together one of the best seasons in school history.

For Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, the list of losses includes the school’s all-time leading receiver being suspended, their starting running back suffering a season-ending injury for a second straight year, and their backup runningback being suspended for possession of marijuana.

On the other hand, Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel’s squad knocked off Oklahoma earlier this year when the Sooners were the top-ranked team in the nation, ascending all the way to number-6 in the polls.

Even though junior quarterback Blaine Gabbert has struggled against teams that bring pressure, I think the added time to prepare for defensive tackle Adrian Clayborn and Iowa’s vaunted defense will help.

Plus, Missouri brings a pretty talented defensive unit to the party as well, allowing just 15.2 points a game, the sixth fewest in the nation.

Final: Missouri 23, Iowa 17
