As a true freshman, Washington State wide receiver Marquess Wilson is racing into the record books faster than he heads towards an endzone.
The first-year player not only ranks as one of the top wideouts in the entire NCAA this fall, but he is on pace to break the most hollowed pass-cathing record in school history – most receiving yards in a season.
Not bad for a kid that only had one other Pac-10 offer, with the other being Arizona State, the Cougs opponent this weekend.
First is a look at what Wilson has accomplished this season. Then, I forecast what he could accomplish if he stays the course in Setting the Pace.
Here is a look at Wilson’s 2010 season By The Numbers:
- Leads the Pac-10 with 99.5 receiving yards per game
- Is tied for second in the Pac-10 with 41 receptions (trailing Jared Karstetter by 3 catches)
- Leads the conference with five 100-yard receiving games
- Leads all freshman in the NCAA with 5.12 catches per game (1 of 3 ranked in top 100)
- Ranks 6th in the NCAA with 796 receiving yards (1st amongst freshman)
- Has four receptions of 50+ yards through eight games (The entire WSU team had seven catches of 50+ over the three previous seasons combine.)
- His 19.4 yards per catch ranks 4th all-time in WSU history for a player with 40+ catches (1. Jason Hill, 2004 – 22.4 2. Deron Pointer, 1993 – 21.2 3. Mike Bush, 2001 – 20.9)
- Has more receiving yards through eight games this season (796) than any other WSU player in an entire season since 2007 (Brandon Gibson – 1,180)
- 796 receiving yards are the most by a WSU player over the first eight games of the season since Jason Hill (875) in 2005
Setting the Pace:
- On pace for 1,194 yards this season…
> WSU school record: 1,180 – Brandon Gibson (2007)
> Pac-10 freshman record: 1,265 – Mike Williams, USC (2002) - On pace for 1,194 yards, which would be the most by a Pac-10 receiver since Oregon State’s Sammy Stroughter (1,293) in 2006
- On pace for 62 receptions, which would tie Jason Hill for 8th most in school history
